tagged by @cicelythereaper (Thank you!)
relationship status: single
favourite colour: I love blue -- cerulean blue, ice blue, electric blue.
last song i listened to: "Dangerous" from Epic: The Musical
songs stuck in my head: "Would've, Could've, Should've" -- Taylor Swift
last thing i looked up: "Joseph Falaky Nagy The poetics of absence in Celtic tradition" (I know, incredibly glamorous and unpredictable.) (In my defense, I saw it on a German Wikipedia page and I needed to see if it was real or a Chat GPT thing since they HAVE created citations for him that aren't accurate before...as part of my ongoing hobby of Collecting Spurious Celtic Studies Citations from it.) (If anyone's in contact with him, don't tell him I didn't know that that was a real lecture of his.)
favourite food: Teriyaki chicken with rice, pork belly (either with ramen/rice or without), hot dog lattices, pavlova.
dream holiday: God it's hard, isn't it? Like, the problem with travelling a lot these days is that I get to travel to a lot of places, but I almost always want to return and see more and do more, so much bucket list is always growing longer.
I've dreamed of going to Egypt ever since I was a little girl; I've looked into all-inclusive group tour packages that wouldn't be *monstrously* expensive that would involve Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Abu Simbel. It would be expensive, more expensive than I'm used to paying without someone on the other end compensating me for my expenses, but it would be a once in a lifetime kind of expense for a once in a lifetime trip.
Obviously, my heart's in Ireland, but it's always a matter of..."Do I want a holiday there or do I want to live there?" I'm never living in San Francisco, New York, or Amsterdam. For professional reasons, I might have to live at Dublin at some point because there's so MUCH relating to the field there, but I don't think I'd *really* be happy there. But those are all places that I've either enjoyed staying in...or enjoyed aspects of (in the case of NYC and Dublin). With some places in Ireland, it's the reverse where I know that 2 weeks or even a month isn't enough and it'll never really be enough unless I'm actually living there and I'm working there. I love going, and I take every opportunity to go, and I'm always grateful for the opportunity, but it's also never really enough, either.
I'd love to go back to the Netherlands, visit my friends there, see more of the country besides a few cities, grab the Miffy merchandise I didn't get ahold of last time, down my weight in Stroopwafels. I'd love to visit Japan one of these days, I feel like that's almost an inevitability at this point.
I'd love to go back to Norway for more than 24 hours, as Cicely knows, I've been drooling over a specific fine dining place in Norway that is set on an actual fjord and has an underwater level (If I had unlimited money, I WOULD spend a week or two in a submarine exploring the deep sea, though I wouldn't be doing it with carbon fiber.) I'd love to go to the Viking Ship Museum, I'd love to explore some of the country outside of Oslo, especially since that *is* where my ancestors are from and, not to be like "I'm Actually™ Norwegian™", but...my paternal grandfather actually was in contact with his cousins from there; it isn't a MASSIVELY distant thing like, say, the German or Scottish side of the family. Even if that's the fucked up side of the family.
I'd love to spend a week or two scurrying around London, seeing all the museums, possibly making a private trip to Whitechapel to give my regards to the victims of the Whitechapel Murders. I'd love to spend a month or so scurrying around France, especially Paris, Versailles, and Brittany. Closer to home, I've dreamed for ages of getting to spend a night or two in St. Augustine and getting to see the city at night, since we always have to leave before I can do the ghost tours. I'd love to go to Colonial Williamsburg at least once before I move from the States to somewhere else.
But. I love traveling, even when it doesn't always love me, since I have notoriously bad luck with it, and there's a lot of the world I still want to get to, and there's a lot I still want to do and see.

I am deviating from my normal posts to give you a taste of the amazing trip I am currently on. Today, I visited Abu Simbel, one of the most mind-blowing sites in Egypt. This was built during the reign of Ramses II to discourage potential invaders coming from the south. According to graffiti in the nearby mountains, it worked!
Let me know if you want to see more, and I'd be happy to share!

Al Simhara, day 3
Tumblr media
Catherine: Hi everyone! Let's dive right into the episode without any long introductions. Waking up on the third day, we explored the dungeon where we found ourselves. Yesterday, we were too tired to do it before bed, but today we discovered a couple of interesting sarcophaguses here.
Tumblr media
Alice: We also tried clearing the piles of stones in the corners — from my experience, I know you can often find something interesting there. So, we had to do some work with the pickaxe.
Tumblr media
Catherine: Unfortunately, there was nothing under those heaps of cobblestones. Well, at least we got another dose of strength training, which is good for our health.
Tumblr media
Alice: After inspecting everything we could in the dungeon, we packed up our tent and finally made it to the surface. Since we were at the cemetery, we decided to visit the local museum as well.
Catherine: There, we found an interesting collection of exhibits: sarcophaguses, mummies, ancient jewelry from tombs, and other items related to ancient Egyptian burial culture.
Tumblr media
Alice: When we left the museum, we realized we had only 12 hours left until the end of our vacation. We needed to hurry to fit in everything we had planned for the day. So, we quickly freshened up using the portable shower we bought on the first day at the market and set off on our way.
Tumblr media
Catherine: On the third day, we decided to visit the attractions on our side of the river. The director mapped out the following route for us. First, we would reach the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Then we would cross the mountain pass and descend into the Sky Valley, where the "Water in the Sand" oasis and the Pyramid of the Sky awaited us.
Alice: From there, we would go to the Southern Beach, where we would see the Abu Simbel rock temple, and then relax a bit by the sea. After that, the sightseeing part of our trip would be over.
Tumblr media
Catherine: Following the planned route, we set off for the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. This female pharaoh left behind a spacious and magnificent building — just as monumental as the structures we saw yesterday.
Tumblr media
Alice: We also visited the remains of an ancient quarry located near the temple. Once again, we felt like grains of sand compared to what we saw.
Tumblr media
Catherine: It's frightening to think about how many people worked in this place in ancient times and how many perished during the construction of all these structures. They didn't have the powerful technology we have today!
Tumblr media
Alice: To avoid dwelling on these sad thoughts, we set off on the road again. Soon we found ourselves in the Sky Valley. There we rested in the coolness of the "Water in the Sand" oasis and had a snack at the same time.
Tumblr media
Catherine: Then we moved to the nearby Pyramid of the Sky. This structure is elegantly situated at the foot of a mountain.
Tumblr media
Alice: At the entrance to the pyramid, we were greeted by a small collection of local sculptures.
Tumblr media
Catherine: Additionally, the entrance to the tomb was marked by a tall obelisk adorned with ancient inscriptions.
Tumblr media
Alice: The sands around the pyramid also hide many ancient artifacts. After digging a bit in one of the piles of shards and scrap metal, I found a fragment of a sarcophagus and even a piece of gold!
Tumblr media
Catherine: After finishing our inspection of the pyramid and rejoicing in our finds, we drove to the Abu Simbel rock. Carved into it is an entire composition — giant statues of ancient Egyptian deities, as well as sculptures of pharaohs and their family members.
Tumblr media
Alice: In the middle of the sculptural composition is a tall door, behind which lies on of the ancient temple. But it's not so easy to get in there — as written at the entrance, you need to place offerings on special pedestals on either side of the door.
Catherine: A very ancient item or a precious gemstone could serve as an offering. Unfortunately, we didn't have anything suitable with us. We tried to put the treasures we found before on pedestals, but apparently, they were not beautiful enough for the gods. Oh well, these things are good enough for us!
Tumblr media
Alice: Leaving the ancient gods in peace, we moved to a beach nearby. It was adorned with an ancient boat, similar to the one we saw in the Ship’s Oasis.
Tumblr media
Catherine: This beach is deserted and wild. Apparently, the point is that local traditions do not encourage undressing in the presence of strangers, especially for women.
Alice: Fortunately, we did not encounter any morality police on the seashore who would monitor our behavior. Therefore, we calmly put on our swimsuits and went to enjoy the water.
Tumblr media
Catherine: The sea water here is warm, and its color is very tender, so swimming here is a pleasure. I happily took a dip, even though I started feeling the first signs of a cold. I don't know where I caught the virus — maybe on the first day at the market.
Tumblr media
Alice: We didn't want to leave the beach for a long time, so we stayed there until the sun began to set.
Tumblr media
Catherine: We had one last evening in the town and one last chance to make purchases. So, we said goodbye to the beach and went back to the market. First, we went to a café to try falafel — it's a local fast food.
Alice: The dish turned out to be very tasty, so we had dinner with great pleasure.
Tumblr media
Catherine: Near the café, we met a woman who introduced herself as a "special merchant". As it turned out, she trades in rewards that can be bought with ancient coins.
Alice: But here's the problem — she didn't want to sell us anything! The thing is, we had little experience in Egyptian adventures, so our rating in this country was too low. What kind of discrimination is this?! With the coins we collected in the tombs, we could afford at least some pemmican!
Tumblr media
Catherine: In short, we had to do without this mysterious dish. Maybe it's for the best. Instead, we went to the relic store to sell the minerals we found there. We decided to keep for ourselves the ancient sculptures we obtained during our adventures.
Tumblr media
Alice: After selling everything unnecessary, we went to the hardware store again, as we already had a couple of ideas about what else we wanted to bring from Egypt.
Catherine: I wanted to get an incense holder. I really liked this item during yesterday's overnight stay.
Alice: And I decided to buy a snake. I've long wanted to try myself as a snake charmer!
Catherine: Alice, are you sure about your choice? I think it's not very safe.
Alice: I’m absolutely sure! Besides, the seller says that all the snakes at the market are harmless and non-venomous.
Catherine: Well, okay! Let's hope he's not lying to us.
Tumblr media
Alice: Finally, we visited the bookstore. There I bought a couple of cookbooks — I'm interested in trying to make falafel myself, which we ate!
Catherine: After that, we felt satisfied with our shopping and went to the base camp to rest and prepare for our departure.
Tumblr media
Catherine: Alice, how's it going? Any luck summoning the snake?
Alice: Not yet, something's not working...
Catherine: Maybe you should give it some money?
Alice: Haha, funny! No, I'll play for it again. Or maybe you want to try?
Catherine: No, I want to sit by the fire a little longer. It's so warm and cozy here — just right to avoid getting a full-blown cold.
Alice: Of course, sit and get better! I'll practice a bit more.
Catherine: Okay, Alice — come here! The trip is almost over. Let's just relax by the fire before the journey ahead.
Alice: Sure, I'm coming! I've had enough playing for today.
Catherine: Great, get comfortable. So, what did you think of Al Simhara?
Alice: It's a wonderful place! So many impressions! All these huge sculptures, ancient temples, picturesque oases, and adventures in the tombs... it was an exciting vacation!
Catherine: I completely agree. And I also really liked the atmosphere and aesthetics here. Especially the ancient treasures and rich burial culture. It's a bit creepy but very captivating. I'm no longer surprised that some people become Egyptologists.
Alice: Oh yes, this ancient civilization still holds many secrets and discoveries! Let's hope our review has sparked interest in it for someone else.
Catherine: Yes, that would be great. Well, it's time to say goodbye. Goodbye, dear viewers!
Alice: Until next time! And let's hope they are as eventful as this one!
